the colbys episode 29 - “something old, something new”

Sable recruits Lucas to fly out to Las Vegas to stop Miles and Channing from eloping. Fortunately, the two have some time since Miles and Channing do not intend to elope until the following morning. Meanwhile, Channing decides to call her uncle at the hotel, but he has checked out. Even better, the hotel amazingly knew and told Channing that Lucas was on his way to Las Vegas. Who doesn’t tell a hotel where you are going when you check out? Channing is no fool. Miles is ready to enjoy a night together in the hotel room, but Channing convinces him to spend the night on the town. I wonder what Channing has in mind.

I remember when Fred Travalena was popular (or at least somewhat popular)

Channing is getting ready

When Sable and Lucas arrive and catch up with Miles and Channing, it is too late - the two pushed up their elopement and are now married. Ahhh Channing, you are definitely a clever woman. Well, what can Sable do? There is a new Mrs. Miles Colby. On the way back to Los Angeles, Sable does warn Channing that if she hurts Miles like Fallon did, she will be in Sable’s crosshairs, and that is not a pleasant place to be.

Who doesn’t love a surprise from Sable?

Jeff goes to his mother for some advice and asks her would things have been different had Philip lived and she knew that Jason was her baby’s father. Frankie really cannot answer the questions because Philip did die. Still, she notes the strength of the blood bond (and that she probably loved Jason more than Philip). Frankie feels Jeff is hiding more and Jeff acknowledges it but cannot tell her the details. In fact Jeff seems to tell a lot of people, including his sister Monica, that there is something important he needs to say but he cannot. I got a better idea - just don’t raise the issue at all. Jeff later does promise Fallon (who still hasn’t left the bedroom) that he will not reveal that Miles may be the father of Fallon’s unborn baby.

They will along so well.

Jason is on the brink of having his Top Secret I.M.O.S. project getting the green light from the folks in Washington. At least they do not drag out what this Top Secret project is. Apparently, Colby Enterprises does everything since I.M.O.S. stands for International Manned Orbital Satellite. Basically, Colby Enterprises is going to lead an international consortium of private companies to build the International Space Station (before it existed). Who knew that Colby Enterprises had an Aerospace Division. It is quite a different industry than building a pipeline.

Oh look, it’s Top Secret

Jason is going to need a liaison with Washington to get the project going and that man is former Senator Cash Cassidy. Jason is not thrilled working with Senator Cassidy since he has bad blood with Cassidy’s father. (Geez, sounds familiar with Blake’s dealings with the Fallmont Family.) But, Jason really does not have any choice. Tension between the two already begins when it is suggested that some in Washington want the Soviets involved in the project. Jason wants this project to be completely run by private enterprise and that is one thing the Soviets do not have. There is so much fun and dated Cold War stuff here. Jason does finally relent and agrees to hear out why letting the Soviets involved is a good idea. Even better, Jason invites Sen. Cassidy to a party that Sable is throwing that evening to celebrate Miles and Channing. Why would he invite Sen. Cassidy? Hmmm . . .

Star Wars

I am very excited that we are finally giving Monica some decent storylines. She definitely needs it. Monica finally speaks to Jason about the airplane crash. She tells him that she was involved with a married man after swearing she would not make that mistake again. Again? Interesting, why bring that up now? Also, why tell your father this. I mean if you want advice on being involved with a married man, why now speak to your Aunt Frankie? She is the expert. Jason is understanding and is glad that Monica came to him.

Oh look, Fallon is in bed.

Also, Monica hits the ground running over at Colby Enterprises. She is going to be the one to connect Zach Powers to the oil spill at San Miguel Harbor. Apparently, no one thought of speaking to Mahoney’s widow so Monica goes to pay her a visit. Monica learns that Mahoney had established an account for his wife and had put $2,500 in that account the day before the oil spill. Monica asks for the bank book to find out where the money came from (Do you really need the bank book for that?). When Monica leaves, she notices a Mercedes and has the license plate run.

Charming the daughter

Wouldn’t you know it, she traces the car to Zach Powers. I guess Zach already had a tail on Monica, or maybe he likes hanging out in front of the home of Mahoney’s widow. Whatever, Monica tells Zach what she is doing and what she knows - including that Zach has some outstanding tickets (how nice of her). Zach is impressed and would expect nothing less from Sable Colby’s daughter.

And charming the mother.

Bliss has Nikolai (Kolya for short) do some promotion at the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Bliss remains unimpressed with Kolya since he was so cold and formal with her. Anna tells Bliss that Kolya likes her but cannot say anything because they are constantly being watched by the Soviets, including their instructor Sasha Malenkov (Sasha is short for Dmitri - one of the things I learned from my study of Russian literature) who is part of the KGB. The Soviets do not like their people fraternizing too much with Americans. Ahhh, again the Cold War fun stuff.

Even though Sable did not get to throw Miles and Channing a big wedding, she does throw them a beautiful dinner party (even Fallon made it down stairs for it). Before the party, Jason shows Channing a file he had on her, and asked her about something in it. (Damn it, they don’t tell us.) When Channing says she was young, Jason notes he was young too and burns the file. Jason will not hold it against her. All he wants is what is best for Miles.

Chamming is not the only one with files on other people.

As a wedding gift, Jason makes Miles in charge of the Aerospace Division which is really a big deal with the I.M.O.S. Project moving forward. Sable is very excited as is the whole family. Something confuses me, if this is a family celebration, why is Cash invited? Oh we find out why - Cash and Monica already know each other from the time Monica spent the summer in Washington D.C. before going to law school. What a great coincidence. Monica is shocked by the appearance of Cash and rushes to make a phone call to someone in India.

Someone is shocked by the arrival of Cash

After dinner, Cash is alone with Monica and you can totally tell there is some chemistry (or at least past history) between the two. It’s a shame that Cash is married and has a son. Strange, Monica mentioned a previous relationship with a married man. Time to connect the dots here. And even if one has not figured this out yet, there can be even less doubt when an upset Monica is able to get hold of Connie in India to tell her that Cash will be working with Jason and is moving to California. Further, Monica is afraid that Cash will find something out. Now, what could that be?

Amazing when you mention a previous relationship with a married man and then he shows up.

Memorable Dialogue

Channing: Look Mrs. Colby, this elopement wasn’t my idea. Miles can be very persuasive when he wants something.
Sable: And you resisted for what - a whole week. What strength of character.

Sable: You have a lot of surface charm yourself. Miles bought it. So did I, but I warn you Channing, you hurt him and you’ll answer to me. And you won’t find me charming - not in the least.
