the colbys episode 48 - “dead end”

Pissed, Jason heads to his study. Is he going to take one of his many rifles to confront Phillip. No, he has a better idea and grabs his grandfather’s whip. When the two brothers finally confront each other, Jason discards the whip and the two fight to the point of exhaustion. Are they seriously fighting over Frankie?

No one wins when Frankie is involved

Frankie accuses Sable of sending Jason down to the Pool House. That is a strange accusation to make since Jason visits Frankie at the Pool House all the time and how would Frankie know that Sable knew she was with Phillip. Don’t try to deflect, Frankie. You are the one to blame for this. Sable rightly claims that Frankie has proven to be the slut Sable always thought she was.

Sable doesn’t want to hear it from Frankie

The next morning, Jason is willing to talk to Frankie and Frankie plays the victim. She told Jason to keep Phillip away but he would not listen. Jason counters that Frankie lacks the self control to say no. Frankie even hurls that Jason still has feelings for Sable. You would think that Frankie would be more contrite about what she had done. Jason feels the marriage may be a mistake (finally coming to that realization) and Frankie agrees. Frankie leaves the Pool House - finally.

Was Frankie even married long enough to Roger to get a monogrammed robe

While Phillip and Jason are fighting on the lawn, all the younger Colbys are at dinner to celebrate Kolya’s new position in New York. It is actually nice to see Jeff, Fallon, Miles, Channing, Bliss, Koyla and Monica (poor Monica is the only one without a partner) together and getting along. How long will this last? Not long as Miles and Jeff fight over Jeff’s generosity towards Phillip. Fallon wants none of this and decides to go home. In the car ride home, Fallon tells Jeff that she has been feeling vacant since Lauren was born and she does not believe it to be post partum depression (like she had with L.B.). The following morning, Fallon is spooked by a crank phone call she receives. (Are the aliens trying to contact her already?)

We should have more of this

Phillip really needs the $2 million. He tries to get Zach to front him the $2 million before he gives him the confidential Colby Enterprises information but Zach is no fool. Phillip needs to get that information to Zach and quickly. Phillip invites Sable to lunch and instead of just asking her for the money, he arranges it that Sable leaves the table giving him time to steal Sable’s access card to Colby Enterprises. Obviously, Sable will not know it is missing. And, does Phillip intend to give it back to Sable. Phillip uses the card to get the information that Zach wants.

Perfect way not to draw attention to proprietary information

Zach tries to get the information for only $2 million (he claims that he could not get all $3 million on short notice). Phillip is not playing. He gives Zach 24 hours to come up with the whole $3 million. Zach has a better idea. He is just going to break into Phillip’s hotel room and try and steal the information (why would Phillip stay in Zach’s hotel?). Zach does not find the information but does find a rifle and a matchbox from a hotel in Eureka. Phillip hasn’t managed to use all those matches yet? Zach puts the pieces together and realizes that it was Phillip who shot at Frankie and Jason in Eureka.

Zach has even more leverage over Phillip

Zach wants to make amends with Sable. Sable wants to be honest with Zach. She does not love him, she loves Jason and there is nothing she can do about it. It is like a curse. A curse Zach knows all too well since that is how he feels about Sable. The two seem to part on good terms.

Are they really over?

Lucas shows up in Los Angeles and is willing to settle the lawsuit with Jason, but Jason will have none of it. He would rather see Lucas put out of business as a public service. Jason is not even willing to settle when Lucas threatens to print articles regarding Monica’s bastard and Phillip’s gun smuggling. Unable to move Jason, Lucas tries to get Channing to charm Jason into dropping the suit. Why would Channing do it? Besides, what leverage does Lucas have since Miles knows about the birth control pills. Lucas knows that Channing wasn’t actually raped despite what Channing says. How does Lucas know this and what evidence does he have? If Channing does not help, he will pretty much tell Miles that Channing is a slut. Channing calls Lucas’s bluff - besides, she is pregnant with Miles’s child and nothing Lucas will say will harm her marriage. She got pregnant really quick after going off the pill.

The poor plant!

Jason and Phillip have no interest in finding Frankie. She has run off before (many times) and will come back. And, do we really care if she doesn’t? Jeff cares and he cannot believe that Jason is so indifferent to it. This is really none of Jeff’s business but Jeff is determined to find his mother. After Jason snidely suggests that Jeff ask Phillip, Jeff goes to Phillip who tells Jeff about the time Frankie ran off following their honeymoon. Since Frankie loves the beach so much, she ran off to this hotel along the shore - Casa Malibu.

Frankie is torn

What other leads does Jeff has - so he finds the hotel. And wouldn’t you know it - that is where Frankie is. Frankie is sitting on the beach in her monogrammed robe thinking about Jason and Phillip. That ocean looks so tempting to Frankie. Maybe she has a solution to her predicament. Jeff arrives and bangs on the door. The banging disturbs another guest who tells Jeff that he saw Frankie go to the fishing pier. Let’s just ignore how he would know this information or which stranger is which at the hotel. Jeff heads to pier and sees his mother’s robe. He looks out into the ocean, and there is a woman about to drown. Let her, Jeff. Jeff, of course, will not allow this and jumps into the ocean to rescue his mother.

Not the right time for a swim, Frankie

Memorable Dialogue

Fallon: It’s just that I worry about you. Am I over-reacting?
Jeff: Are you going to hit me if I say yes.

Frankie: You sent him down there, didn’t you?
Sable: I tried to stop him. I didn’t want to see him hurt.
Frankie: Not you’re the saint.
Sable: I always thought you were a slut, I never thought you’d prove it.

Frankie: I love Jason
Sable: Please, don’t try to convince me, just convince Jason.
Frankie: Where is he?
Sable: Where is he? Out of reach to you, I should think.

Frankie: I asked you to keep him away and you wouldn’t listen.
Jason: Do I have to stand guard over you. Are you helpless to say no?

Jason: Maybe this marriage. Maybe we’re making a mistake.
Frankie: A mistake? Maybe we are.

Zach: I manipulate people, yes. I pull strings. Worse, I enjoy it. Now that won’t change.
Sable: No, it won’t. You’re manipulating me now.
Zach: But, I’m trying not to enjoy it.

Zach: He’s the wrong man for you, Sabella. I wish to God you weren’t as wrong for me.

Lucas: I lost my conscience years before you lost your virtue. I’ll do anything to anyone if I have to.
