dynasty Episode 165 - The Mothers

The Carrington medical saga continues.  I guess it is kind of interesting and dramatic.  But, it does not have the Dynasty feel.  Yes, things change, but one can watch Knots Landing for this kind of drama.  Anyway, poor Krystina needs a heart and she needs one fast - like in three weeks.  At least Krystina is rich because she flown out to Southern California to the best facility for heart transplants.  There are 50/50 odds that the transplant will work even if she is the youngest patient the doctor ever had.  The only problem is finding a heart in time.

Blake and Krystle can't believe the change in direction on this show.

The rest of the family show the same disbelief.

Not only does the heart need to be from a young girl, there must be a blood match and other compatibility.  What better way to find a heart than to go on television and make a plea.  Call my cynical, but it is not like many people have three year old girl hearts sitting in their freezers waiting to be sold.  Blake even gets his new buddy Alexis to help out by getting her to report the story in her newspaper and through her nationally syndicated columnists.  The waiting for a new heart begins.

I think I would take a heart from this woman.

I think I would take a heart from this woman.

There is a nice creepy scene when a woman, Adele, confronts Krystle in the hospital and offers to get her a heart for money.  Yeah, just a little bit crazy.  Krystle is horrified but what do you expect when you go on television begging for a heart.  Good thing Adele did not get the heart without first asking.

The color of the room would give me a heart attack

Krystina's medical emergency brings the entire family together which makes the viewing kind of boring.  Steven welcomes Dana into the family.  Leslie moves into the mansion and is building a relationship with Ben.  Sammy Jo continues to wear ugly sweaters, with Leslie getting into the act. (When Leslie is not dressing like a boy.)  The family sits by the phone waiting for people to call in with their offers of a heart.  Of course, the calls are either from perverts (Sammy Jo is the lucky one on that) or from people offering prayers (which is not a heart).

Oh yeah, Krystina continues to lie down

Alexis also happens to be in California with her new business partner, Michael.  There, the two attend a party thrown by Dirk Maurier, an investor/high roller in junk bonds.  I guess he is a Michael Milken type that was very popular in the 1980s until it all went crashing down in 1987.  Dirk is smitten with Alexis and wants more than a business relationship.  Alexis is aware of that and keeps it just at arms length.  Michael now feels threatened that Alexis would double cross him.  Has Alexis ever double crossed anyone?  Then Alexis tells Michael not to threaten her because a man tried to kill her once and that man is now in jail for a long time.

Not much Alexis but at least she is on the phone

Wait, there has been more than one person who has tried to kill Alexis.  It can't be Joseph because he is dead.  It can't be Blake because he is in Southern California attending to Krystina.  Oh, it is Congressman Neil McVane who once strangled Alexis (who was rescued by Blake) and then set Alexis up for the murder of Mark Jennings.  Yeah, Neil should be prison for a long time for his killing of Mark Jennings.  Should be.

Neil McVane gets some great going away news.

Neil McVane gets some great going away news.

No, Neil is let out of prison after serving only about two years (by my most generous estimate) for first degree murder.  Wow, Colorado is the place to commit a crime.  Before leaving prison, Neil gets some excellent information from his bunk mate who has some great information about Adam Carrington.  Fresh out of prison, Neil shares that information with Adam.  It seems Adam is not a Carrington.  What?!?  Are we really going to rehash that.  Neil's bunk mate knows for a fact that Adam Carrington died a day and a half after the kidnapping.  Adam asks Neil what he wants.  Neil, who relishes referring to Adam as Mr. Torrence, tells him that he will be in touch.  This will last a while.

Sam Dexter sure has changed

Sam Dexter sure has changed

Dex brings his new partner, Dominique, out to the Dexter ranch in Wyoming as they investigate a possible acquisition.  Dominique meets Sam Dexter who has changed quite a bit (played by a new actor).  She also meets Sarah and Boyd Curtis, old friends of Dex.  Sarah and Dex once had a relationship but Boyd won the coin toss.  Sarah also happens to have an accent that one would not find in Wyoming.  It is very Southern.  Even better, Cassie Yates, who plays Sarah Curtis, gets an opening credit, while poor LeAnn Hunley still does not have one.

Nothing like asking someone to kill their daughter for their heart

Nothing like asking someone to kill their daughter for their heart

Tragedy strikes the Curtis family as Boyd is killed in a car accident that spared Sarah.  The two had a little girl, Cathy, who survived but is now brain dead.  How convenient.  It seems there is a possible heart donor for Krystina.  All that is needed is the macabre spectacle of Blake pleading for the girl's heart.  We can only imagine what the conversation between Dex and Sarah was like when he brought up the idea.  Blake is able to convince Sarah to take her daughter off life support and give the heart to Krystina.  They fly out to California.  On the tarmac, Sarah and Krystle meet and form a bond.  How touching.  I will give credit for a great directing job on that one even if I am bored.

Memorable Dialogue

Adam:  McVane?  I thought you were still. . .
Neil:  Still in prison?  Call it good behavior or call it the fact that Mark Jennings was scum and he isn't particularly missed, not even by my parole board.
Adam:  What do you want, Mr. Congressman.
Neil:  I want to spend a few moments with you, Mr. Torrence.
Adam:  That name is Carrington!
Neil:  Is it?
Adam:  Yes
Neil:  I don't think it is.  In fact, I know it isn't, Mr. Torrence.
