dynasty Episode 56 - The Vote

Steven is determined to leave the mansion and raise Danny on his own.  There is just one problem, he does not have any money and for some reason (other than to make him broke), his money and past pay checks have been tied up.  Fallon has agreed to give him whatever he wants and allows him to stay at La Mirage while he looks for a place.

They do say the divorce lawyer is always the first

Krystle, bless her soul, tries to mediate between the two, but it is not going well.  Blake is too busy with his business that is being destroyed by Alexis.  Besides, he truly believes that Danny should be raised by Krystle and not some homosexual.  You kind of wonder whether Blake's motive is too make Krystle happy with a child or he really does not believe a child should be raised by a gay.  If Blake is trying to do this for Krystle, it is not working as Krystle is steadfast in her belief that Steven should be able to raise Danny.  Steven, meanwhile, is just too scarred from the hurt caused by Blake to allow Blake's better attributes sway his decision.

Steven uses his college directory to find himself a good divorce lawyer because we all know Sammy Jo will not make this easy for him and he comes up with Chris Deegan.  Deegan agrees to take the case and completely understands Steven's situation.  Hell, Deegan had to get away from his own bad marriage.   Why should we care so much about the divorce lawyer's life?    Hmmm. . . we know why.

Meanwhile, Kirby is the new Krystle - in that she is living in a house with the ex-wife hanging around.  Kirby catches Fallon and Jeff in a happy moment of the two reminiscing.  Well Kirby, what do you expect living in a home with your husband's ex-wife when they have a child together?  That is the baggage you signed on to.  Kirby knows it and Krystle tries to comfort her and convince her that Fallon does not have any designs on Jeff (which is true).

You think you had it rough, Kirby, Krystle has to deal with Alexis!

You think you had it rough, Kirby, Krystle has to deal with Alexis!

The main saga of the episode is the first real business show down between Blake and Alexis.  The dynamic is interesting on so many levels.  You have Blake, the virtuous captain of industry who worked his way to his position through hard, back-breaking work.  On the other side, you have Alexis, who inherited it.  At the same time, though, Alexis adds an element of feminism in the battle as she tries to break the good old boy network.  You can teach college courses on this dynamic.  Is Alexis really a feminist icon or is she just the scorned wife?  Alexis schemes her way to defeat Blake, but is that all that she has - and is that a great feminist role model.

Bring on the fat cats!

Bring on the fat cats!

In any event, Blake is happy to see that his cowardly Board members have bothered to show up and not answer his phone calls.  But no time for pleasantries as Alexis enters and demands that the Board approve the merger between Denver Carrington and Colby Co.  Oh, and if you do not approve of the merger, Alexis will fire you on the spot and install a more pliant Board.  The Board votes for the merger and Blake's approval makes it unanimous.  There is surprise that Blake would agree to it, but he did so to keep an eye on Alexis and to make sure that she does not make any move concerning Denver Carrington while he tries to stop this merger.

Bringing the estrogen to the Board room

Bringing the estrogen to the Board room

At least Blake did get Congressman McVane to stall approval of the merger.  Alexis is angered that she cannot merge the two companies right away (by the way, these things take months to accomplish).  But, Alexis has something on Congressman McVane.  It seems, of course, that McVane is having an affair with a 17 year old daughter of a governor.  That should make great headlines - and Alexis is more than happy to share that information with the Denver Chronicle.  Good work Morgan Hess.  Now Hess needs to figure out who has been trailing him, and why we should care that someone is.

There is already tension between Denver Carrington and Colby Co as Colby Co's evaluation of Denver Carrington's leases in the Gulf is off by 30%.  Blake will not be robbed and demands a meeting with Alexis.  Alexis, now a captain of industry, suggests that Blake meet her at her apartment at 6 pm because she is a very busy woman.

Always making important calls

Always making important calls

A very busy woman indeed as Alexis's first order of business is to go to La Mirage to see Mark who has not been answering her phone calls.  Take a hint Alexis.  When Alexis arrives, she sees Mark and Fallon kissing.  Feeling a sense of maternal love, or jealously that your younger daughter has the man you want, Alexis warns Fallon of Mark for being a male tramp who only uses woman for their money.  Alexis is the one who wanted to be used.

Upon returning from La Mirage, Alexis gets some good news as Steven has agreed to work for his mother.  Alexis is over joyed to have her son there.  Oh, what about the son you already have working there?  Adam knows where Alexis's true feelings are, especially after Alexis blames Adam for a tiff with Steven for which Steven was responsible.  Alone, Adam is about to take some prescription medicine.  Is this going to explain his sociopathic behavior?

Now, Alexis is ready for business

Now, Alexis is ready for business

Alexis arrives late to her penthouse meeting with Blake but she needs to change first into something more comfortable before going over the Denver Carrington evaluation figures.  Alexis returns in a stunning (and totally inappropriate for a business meeting) outfit which Blake calls lovely and Alexis believes the two will enjoy a wonderful evening together.  Blake decides to call Krystle to invite her over.  That does not sit well with Alexis who agrees to have the meeting the following day.  Alexis seriously was going to try to seduce Blake again and when he rejected her, Alexis's anger and hatred for Blake increased to the point that she ruined a perfectly good martini.  Not feminism at its best.

Memorable Dialogue

Krystle:  That's not the issue because it doesn't matter what Steven's lifestyle is.
Blake:  You mean his gayness - that is the polite word they use for it nowadays, isn't it?

Alexis:  Blake, always good to see you, particularly on your abdication day.
Blake:  I've abdicated nothing.
Alexis:  Yet

Blake:  I've got some papers here that your office sent over.  The way I read them, your people have juggled the figures on my company to the point where it would be laughable if it weren't so criminal.
Alexis:  Are you sending me off to jail, then.  Might I have a pedicure first.

Alexis:  Because at 6 o'clock, I like to slip out of my shoes and into something more comfortable, like a drink.

Alexis:  Because of the type of man [Mark] he obviously is
Fallon:  That being?

Alexis:  Do you really want me to tell you?
Fallon:  Yeah, I really want to hear it.
Alexis:  Well, he's a male tramp.

Alexis:  I am sick and tired of being used by miserably ungrateful men.

Alexis:  A woman begins her young adult life being soft, loving and giving.  Then what is all comes down to finally is use or be used.

Steven:  But it will be worth it to get Sammy Jo out of my life once and for all.  She should have never been there in the first place.
Chris:  I know what you mean - completely.
Steven:  Completely.  I don't know about that.

Blake:  Oh, by the way Alexis, if that's the outfit that you do business in, you're going to have to be a hell of a lot more dazzling before I let you rob me blind.

Alexis:  I hate you Blake.  Oh God, I hate you.
