the colbys episode 37 - “power Plays”

Arthur had advised Sable to proceed slowly regarding Scott/Cash/Monica. But, nothing will stop Sable from giving Jason his first born grandson - she will not be outdone by Frankie. Sable invites Adrienne to lunch where she basically asks Adrienne to give up custody of Scott and allow him to be raised as a Colby. Did Sable really think that Adrienne would just fold so easily? Pissed, Adrienne goes to Monica and accuses her of getting her mother to do her dirty work. Monica rightly claims that she had nothing to do with Sable’s actions. But, Monica believes they should talk about things. Adrienne will have nothing to do with it. Scott is hers, all hers and only hers. Monica does confront her mother about what she did and tells Sable to stay out of her life. Later, Cash, alone with Monica, tells her that he wants to be a family - just he, Scott and Monica. Monica seems receptive.

This lunch will go well

Sable at least believes she may have helped her other daughter. Kolya has been unable to find a dance partner. Sable flies in a potential candidate - Georgina Sinclair - from New York. The two have wanted to dance before. Kolya and Georgina have instant chemistry and Kolya now has a new partner. I am sure this will not make Bliss jealous at all. Great job Sable.

Sable is always helpful

The legal departments of both Colby Enterprises and Powers International have done a really poor job with respect to Onishi Electronics. A foreigner can not hold a majority share in Onishi so neither Jason nor Zach can control Onishi. Don’t they have lawyers to tell them this. Monica informs Jason that Colby Enterprises has divested half of its interest in Onishi. Jason has a better plan. He is going to give up any interest in Onishi and try to acquire a U.S. microchip manufacturer - Southwest Synchrodine. (Seriously, couldn’t come up with an easier name). Now, all Jason needs is to get the Board to go along with his plan. This should be a piece of cake.

Don’t worry Bliss, you have nothing to worry about

But. there is a snag. As luck would have it, this is Sable’s first Board meeting. You would expect Sable to be quiet, but she just happens to see a news report (that interrupted a basketball game Zach was watching) of Jason receiving the Man of the Year Award in Toronto (who knew that was breaking news). Frankie is with Jason and when a reporter refers to her as Mrs. Colby, Frankie says they are not married but Jason chimes in that they soon will be. Sable is pissed at Jason and just when Zach shows her how she can harm Jason in the Boardroom.

The deciding vote

Sable arrives a little late for the Board Meeting but not late enough to sit in Connie’s chair (Connie would not mind this time). Jason presents his proposal to the Board and takes a vote. 5 Board members vote against, 3 for and 2 abstentions. Jason holds proxies for Connie and Jeff so the vote is now 5-5-2. As Chairman, Jason is about to break the tie, but Sable chimes in. She is changing her vote from abstention to against. Jason loses this one. He later confronts Sable about her games. Sable swears it was all business, considering she purchased the shares of Onishi that Jason sold. So now, Jason, Sable and Zach each own 1/3 of Onishi’s shares that are publicly available. Sable also notes that she was humiliated by Jason saying he would soon marry Frankie. So it wasn’t all business then. Score one for Sable.

The pic of Jason is a nice touch

Channing wants to cheer Fallon up so she offers to throw her a baby shower. Now that Frankie has gotten into Fallon’s head, Fallon is suspicious of Channing’s motives. Channing swears that Frankie was wrong and gives up trying to be nice to Fallon. Come on Fallon, just let Channing give you the baby shower.

Slow news day in India

Meanwhile, Lucas’s attorney Sam is still lurking around the Colby Mansion. He questions Frankie about Jason’s plans in Toronto but Frankie does not say anything. He later finds Channing and Channing tells him that he better leave or else she will tell Jason about Lucas’s plans. Oh, but Channing will not say anything since Lucas knows that Channing is on the pill, which is odd for a woman who cannot have a child. And to be more dramatic, Sam shows Channing her birth control pills. Wait, how did Sam get those and how did Channing not notice that he birth control pills were missing? Regardless, the two will keep each other’s secret.

Gotta have props

Lucas’s secret will not be kept for long. Frankie finds a member of the staff reading a tabloid and the lead story of the tabloid regards Jason being a traitor by working with the Red Chinese and the Soviets, selling technology to those powers. That’s what tabloids cover, isn’t there another Elizabeth Taylor or Joan Collins marriage to cover? Frankie shows the article to Jason and Jason wants to know who owns the publication. Wouldn’t you know it, it is Lucas Carter. Jason confronts Lucas’s attorney and Sam tells him that Lucas does not want to see either Jason or Connie run for office so he is going to smear them before they have the chance. Jason swears he does not want to be a politician (interesting since there was talk of Charlton Heston running for Governor of California around this time) and is going to sue Lucas for $20 million. Sam calls Lucas and tells him about the potential lawsuit and that they need to act before it ever gets to court.

Jason doesn’t want any crawfish

The Hardy Boys (Jeff and Miles) are on the case of where is Connie. In India, Miles learns that Connie and Hutch chartered a flight to Katmandu, Nepal and Connie took the $2 million in cash in a briefcase with her. This must be before the stringent money laundering laws. The Hardy Boys trace Connie to a monastery in Nepal. The lead monk (don’t ask me what they call him) is reluctant to share much information. Connie came to see some American or English monk by the name of Hoyt Parker. Hoyt had left the monastery soon after Connie’s visit. The Hardy Boys check out Hoyt’s cell and find a partially burned news article from The India Times about Connie visiting India (must have been a slow news day). Did Connie give the money to Hoyt and who is this Hoyt person?

On the case

More importantly, where is Connie? We do not need to wait long for an answer to that question. Jason, while confronting Zach and Sable, receives a call from Jeff. Connie is dead.

Sable lays down the gauntlet

Memorable Dialogue

Sable: Yes, faithful Frankie always at her man’s side. Mind you, it’s probably wise. You never know. Someone can come along and woosh your man.

Sable: Your son’s name is Scott, isn’t it?
Adrienne: Yes
Sable: That’s funny. That’s my maiden name, my daughter’s middle name.
Adrienne: Oh, my husband chose it.

Adrienne: I have heard a lot about you, but they didn’t do you justice. You’re amazing.
Sable: You will think about it, won’t you?
Adrienne: Amazing and more than a little crazy. You invite me to lunch and expect me to sell you my son over dessert. He’s not a painting up for auction.

Adrienne [to Monica]: I’ll die before I lose my son and by God, so will you.

Jason: You embarrassed me, you embarrassed yourself.
Sable: Well, I’m used to being embarrassed. In fact, I’m used to being humiliated on television in front of the whole world, thanks to you.

Jason: I know what you’re doing and I don’t like it - using Sable as a puppet in my Boardroom.
Zach: My puppet, Sable? Oh no Jason, you created her. I only helped pull the strings.

Jason: As for Sable, I’ve dealt with her for 28 years. I guess I can deal with her now.
Sable: You think so? Then you’ve learned very little in all those years, darling. But don’t worry - school has just begun.
